How to Get Your First US Client as a VA in Latin America

Why the First Client Is the Hardest
Landing your first US client is the milestone that changes everything. Once you have one client paying you in dollars, the path forward becomes much clearer. But getting to that first yes is where most people get stuck. The real barriers are not knowing where to look for clients who hire internationally, not knowing how to present yourself in a way that builds immediate trust, and uncertainty about whether your English or background will be "good enough."
Step 1: Get Clear on What You're Offering
Before you go anywhere near a client, you need to answer this question in one sentence: "What do I help clients do?" Not "I am a virtual assistant." Something like: "I help real estate agents in the US manage their inboxes, schedule appointments, and follow up with leads so they can focus on closing deals." The more specific you are, the more a client feels like you were made for their problem.
Step 2: Build a Simple Portfolio Before You Start Outreach
You don't need paid clients to have a portfolio. Create two or three samples relevant to your niche: a mock content calendar for a fictional business in Canva, a set of three email templates, or a sample research report. Save these in a Google Drive folder and link to it from your profile. It takes two to three hours to create and dramatically increases your chances of hearing back.
Step 3: Use Delegatoo to Get Found by Clients Already Looking
Clients on Delegatoo are paying a subscription specifically to find and hire VAs. They are already in buying mode. The platform is commission-free, so you keep 100% of what you agree to charge. Latin American VAs are attractive to US clients because of time zone overlap, cultural alignment, and professional communication skills.
Step 4: Write a Profile That Speaks to US Clients
Lead with outcomes, not background. Mention your time zone availability explicitly as it's one of the biggest concerns US clients have when hiring internationally. List tools you already know. Keep your English polished in the profile text as grammar and clarity signal how you'll communicate on the job.
Step 5: Respond Fast and With Confidence
When a client messages you through Delegatoo, respond the same day, ideally within a couple of hours. Don't say "I am interested in the position." Say: "Hi [Name], thank you for reaching out. Based on your listing, it sounds like [specific thing] is a priority. I've helped clients with exactly that and I'm available to jump on a quick call this week."
Step 6: Start Strong and Ask for a Testimonial
Once you land the client, your only job in the first two weeks is to make them feel that hiring you was the best decision they made. Over-communicate. Meet every deadline early. Then after four to six weeks of solid work, ask for a short written testimonial. That testimonial changes everything for landing the next client.
